Software
CLIO is a dedicated web application designed to run within a web browser and does not require much software to produce a functioning kiosk. While some additional software can be added to improve the user experience, the only required software is an operating system, an HTTP web server with PHP 6.0 or newer, and a web browser. All other requirements, such as JavaScript libraries and packages, are handled automatically by the web server, web application and web browser.
Hardware
Kiosk hardware requirements vary depending on the interactive's context. An interactive that relies on high-quality videos, images, or audio may not run smoothly on a single-board computer like the Raspberry Pi and may require a traditional desktop computer.
CLIO is designed to be hardware- and resolution-independent so that it can be used with virtually any computer, operating system, display and input device. Web-based application technologies are widely supported by most computers, allowing institutions with smaller technology budgets to repurpose hardware such as unused and secondhand systems, or utilize a Raspberry Pi (or other economically priced single-board computer). We provide guides for reproducing our POP kiosks using off-the-shelf hardware.
Budget
This project is open-source and there are no licensing fees to consider before trialing or using this software. This means that the entirety of your budget can be dedicated elsewhere. POP kiosks cost approximately $220 to construct yourself.
