Overview

In order to inform the museum community about the CLIO toolkit and garner feedback on interest in and barriers to deploying technology like CLIO, two online informational and discussion sessions were held with 25 museum professionals on May 13th and 14th, 2020. We have provided the transcripts of the discussion portions of both sessions.

Questions

Participants in the digital seminar sessions were asked the following questions:

  • “How could you see integrating technology like this toolkit into your museum practice?”
  • “If you were to explore using this toolkit in your work, what tools would help to make it as easy as possible?”
  • “Could you describe any barriers you might foresee in using open source technologies like this toolkit at your museum?”

Outcome

Attendees expressed excitement at the low cost to deploy the toolkit as well as the “plug-and-play” nature of many of the activity templates, which would allow them to repurpose existing digital content at their institutions. One attendee expressed interest in using the annotated image slide-over activity in an exhibit they are currently designing.

Participants in the discussion sessions echoed feedback from the MuseWeb critique session, expressing a desire for clear examples and how-to guides. One attendee described that having multiple resources to refer to while using the toolkit, such as instructional videos with corresponding blog posts or articles, would be useful.

Barriers to deploying open source technology described by attendees included time and unfamiliarity with these types of technologies. Attendees from smaller museums described limited staff resources as a possible barrier, with one participant stating that while the technology is free, their time is not. They followed up by saying that as many tools that would make it possible to create a proof-of-concept in order to seek funding or approval from supervisors as something they would appreciate.
